Mets Moxey

I’m not sure if the spelling is correct, but that’s what a friend of my parents used to say to me when I was growing up. He talked about a person having moxey, and then asked if I knew what that meant. Moxey, from what I could best tell, was a mix between chutzpah, guts and audacity all rolled into one.

Well, the Mets closer, Frank Francisco, definitely has moxey. He basically called the entire Yankees team chickens because they were always complaining about the umpires’ calls and predicted he would end up getting a save (saves?) against them.

Well, his wish came true. Last night, the Mets were on the verge of squandering a five-run lead against the Yankees at Citi Field, and Francisco was on the cusp of personal responsibility for it. Yet with the winning run at the plate in the top of the 9th inning, he somehow got the moxey to strike out Curtis Granderson and get Texeira to pop up.

The Mets win! The Meeeeets win!

Of course, with a team as strong as the Yankees, this opening game should not serve as any indication about the overall result of the series. Yet with R.A. Dickey pitching on Sunday, it looks like it’s pretty much in the bag to this Mets fan.
